For decades PG county has been known as the most affluent county for African-Americans in the United States. In 2022, Charles county was identified as the most affluent county for African-Americans. Well, PG county is no longer considered the most affluent county for African-Americans, it still has beautiful communities is charming, and a great location while there is plenty to do in PG County, life can get hard and hectic. There may be times when you need extra support. You look for a counselor, but notice that you want one who understands and relate to you, including how your faith is an integral part of your life.

Christian Counseling versus non-Christian (Secular) Counseling 

While secular counseling can be beneficial Christian counseling can offer some benefits that help one whose faith is important in their healing journey. Some benefits of Christian counseling are:

1. The freedom to pray, where, in secular counselors may not pray for me pray in a way that doesn’t align with one’s Christian faith, Christian counselors may pray in a way that is familiar to the client and their faith the Christian client may also feel comfortable to incorporate prayer in and out of session. For instance, if a client is struggling that client may ask the counselor to pray for them. This can be healing and provide the therapeutic benefits in the counseling process.

2. Allowing the Holy Spirit in the counseling room. You know that God is involved in all things. He is your rock, the one you depend on yet in your counseling sessions you find that he has not mentioned at all. The Christian counselor may allow and depend on the Holy Spirit and make that explicit in the counseling session. This can help the Christian client who depends on God, make the connection that God really cares for them and loves them and is involved in their story. The client may see the counselor as a conduit for the Holy Spirit, which may intern help in the clients healing journey.

3. The use of scripture. The client may be relieved to have the Christian counselor incorporate scripture into their sessions without having to be prompted by the client. This may serve the client who relies heavily on the Scriptures and tries to align their lives with the Bible. The client may also feel that because their counselor has a Christian background or is involved in the Christian faith that the counselor would use scripture in the counseling process so that the client doesn’t feel, that the advice they’re receiving from their counselor is contrary to the word of God.

Having a Christian counselor can help the client to feel that they don’t have to put their faith aside to get the help that they need. Providing a Christian-based counseling helps to provide the client, whose faith is an integral part of their lives, with a more holistic incongruent mode of counseling that is aligned with who the client really is. The client doesn’t have to hide their faith to receive the care and treatment that they need through therapy. The client gets to be all of who they are.
